As simple as possible, but no simpler. A wood top over four straight, square legs is a design evolved over thousands of years (~4700 BC!) that hasn't changed much - for good reason. It is a perfect union of human hands and nature's greatest material, made as beautiful and practical as can be with painstakingly selected and matched boards and maximum space between the legs for seating.
